Started as a master plan in 1822 by founder of Singapore Sir Stamford Raffles, the Civic District was urban planning at its best, with sections along the Singapore River marked for use and new buildings erected for the needs of a thriving trade post.
Within the district are located some of our most notable historic buildings and spaces including the Asian Civilisations Museum, the Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall, the former Supreme Court and City Hall buildings, the old Parliament House, Queen Elizabeth Walk and the Padang.
Many of the buildings have been refurbished, repurposed and given a new lease of life for arts and heritage uses, and together with the Esplanade Theatres on the Bay, form the cultural heart of Singapore.
In addition, enhancements to infrastructure have been made in the Civic District to improve accessibility and walkability, with the creation of more venues for outdoor events and programmes such as Car-Free Sunday SG. An 8 km-long “Jubilee Walk” was also developed to tell the story of Singapore’s progress from past to present, and the future.
